Evie returned to Melbourne City Wrestling in November to compete in the Jenny & Vera Memorial Cup Tournament. This was a tournament named after two members of the Melbourne wrestling community who had lost their lives to breast cancer. The darker side of Evie that had often been present when she competed in New Zealand and Australia since December 2013 stayed in tact for her return to MCW. Suffice to say the relationship between Evie and the proud Australian fans felt even more hostile than back in August.
Our Captain expressed discontent with the crowd: "You're booing me? Do you know who I am?". Her travels to Japan and North America over the past two years had boosted her star power. Rumor had it Evie was getting offers from music labels, fashion designers and major motion picture studios thrown at her in all directions. But she only had eyes for wrestling. She was a nice young lady from Auckland merely trying to figure out how to handle the sudden burst of extra attention and be more humble. The crowd could have been nicer to her. Just saying.
Prominent Australian wrestler Shazza McKenzie would be her opponent. Their match would determine the first of the three competitors who would compete later in the night as part of a triple threat to determine the tournament winner. Evie and Shazza were no strangers having had matches against each other in Pro Wrestling Australia.
Evie wanted to begin with a test of strength. At 160 centimeters, Shazza was actually the shorter of the two competitors compared to Evie at 165. Evie used that to her advantage, taunting her opponent about that as Shazza tried to reach up to grasp her hand. Shazza had enough of the mind games, stomping Evie's foot. The two went to the mat, evenly matched as they jockeyed for control. But it was Shazza who nearly took the win in under the first minute, rolling Evie up for a two count.
Both women showcased some great technical wrestling as they pressed on. Once again it was Shazza who proved to be the more masterful on the canvas, getting another roll-up with a two count. Evie's frustration grew, having had enough of the technical stuff. She kicked Shazza in the gut and whipped her across the ring. Shazza came back at Evie with a shoulder tackle. Evie leapfrogged over Shazza during a charge but got pulled down to the canvas. Shazza tried to sunset flip Evie who stopped her with a strike to the face.
Evie went for a roundhouse kick only to get rolled up for another two count. Shazza wasted no time continuing her offense, delivering a northern lights suplex with a bridge for a two. Evie was whipped to the corner and received a running knee to the stomach. But she quickly rebounded, whiplashing Shazza back-of-the-head first into the bottom turnbuckle. Evie kept up the nastier offense, driving her boot into Shazza's throat as she was slumped in the corner. She followed that with her favorite boot scrapes to the face and running face wash combo.
Shazza stayed in the match, kicking out when Evie went for a pin. A hard chop staggered Evie but she recouped quickly, leaping over Shazza when she charged her in the corner. Evie thought she outsmarted Shazza but that wasn't the case as McKenzie caught her with a big boot. Shazza tried for a German suplex but Evie elbowed her way free. Evie tossed Shazza into the top turnbuckle and boot choked her. Shazza evaded offense with a cartwheel, connecting with a couple kicks of her own, but Evie grabbed control back quickly grounding her with a big boot.
Evie delivered a snapmare and kick to the back followed by a running kick to the chest. She stacked Shazza who kicked out at two, infuriating the Kiwi. The two exchanged aggressive strikes until Evie tried to waffle Shazza with a roundhouse. Shazza ducked, coming back on fire with a clothesline, back elbow and Thesz press. Evie was whipped into the second turnbuckle with a drop toe hold that Shazza followed up with double knees to the neck. Shazza continued her attack, draping Evie over the second rope and delivering ten kicks to her chest.
Shazza went for the splits stunner only for Evie to toss her to the corner and connect with the charging Yakuza kick. She went for a pin but only got a two count. Evie lifted Shazza up on her shoulders for TTYL but Shazza elbowed herself free. Shazza fired back with an insane bridging German suplex that nearly spiked Evie's head to the canvas. Evie barely kicked out before the referee struck the mat for three. Shazza followed with the splits stunner, however Evie devoured it and shot back at the Aussie, delivering a nasty running kick to the chest.
Once again Shazza kicked out of Evie's pin attempt. Frustrated Evie ragged Shazza to the corner for a flurry of kicks. Evie strut with quite the mood to the opposite corner and charged at her prone opponent. Shazza surprised her with a sunset flip but our Captain gave a master class in crafty, sitting on top Shazza for the three count and victory. Due to the exhaustion she was feeling, Evie was slumped over a bit and the camera angle made it look like she was holding onto the ropes for leverage. Bad camera angle. Evie won. Moving on.
