Dakota Kai had a match against former American Ninja Warrior competitor Kacy Catanzaro on the June 10, 2020 episode of NXT. Kai was accompanied by her six foot tall, jacked insurance policy Raquel Gonzalez. Dakota had suffered a pinfall loss to her former friend Tegan Nox in a six woman tag team match the Sunday prior at NXT TakeOver: In Your House. She needed to pick up a win to get back on track. Following the opening bell, Our Captain was chillin' like a villain against the turnbuckles, humored at the petite opponent standing across the ring from her.

Kai taunted Kacy with a couple pie faces in the early going. Kacy fired back with some of her athletic offense. Kai took control, smashing Kacy face first into the middle turnbuckle with a flatliner. The Kaio-Kick brought Kacy to the canvas for a two. Kai's taunts backfired, lighting a fire of offense out of Kacy. Kai would put an end to Kacy's second wind with a scorpion kick followed by Go to Kick. Kacy crashed to the canvas hard and Kai scored the pinfall victory.

The Captain of Team Kick marched over to the camera, outright telling the new NXT Women's Champion Io Shirai that she was coming for the championship. She decided to send a further message, attacking the foolish Kacy who didn't take her leave when she had a chance. Kacy's best friend, fellow NXT competitor Kayden Carter came to her rescue, ultimately to no avail as Raquel took her out. Dakota wanted to focus on the title hunt, however Kacy and Kayden were intent on being her roadblock.

On the June 17, 2020 episode of NXT, Kayden faced Dakota with Kacy and Raquel at ringside. Kai flexed her jacked back prior to the bell. Carter fired off explosive offense, but felt the sting of the scorpion kick to turn the tide. Kai tried to punk out Carter who shot back with strikes and kicks. Kai found herself on the apron, a knee flush to the face. Carter spiked Kai skull to canvas with a Heatseeker Piledriver. Carter got distracted by the Kacy and Raquel skirmish on the floor.

Kai rolled Carter up for a pin but Carter kicked out, only for Dakota to hold her arm and transition into a Koji Clutch forcing Kayden to tap. The Koji Clutch was quite an impressive addition to Our Captain's arsenal as she continued to dominate on her quest to become NXT Women's Champion. Kai and Gonzalez were kind enough to spare Kacy and Kayden a post-match beating. But Kacy and Kayden decided to be annoying gophers digging their way into a tag team match against Kai and Gonzalez on the June 24, 2020 episode of NXT.

Kacy and Kayden gave it a good fight but Raquel's power and Dakota's cunning were too much to handle. The KC Express gave it one last go with Carter launching Kacy into the air for a crossbody only for Raquel to catch her in powerbomb position. Raquel gave Carter a big boot before planting Kacy to the canvas with the Chingona Bomb. Kai tagged in and rolled Kacy up with a La Magistral cradle that she would transition into the Koji Clutch, forcing Kacy to tap out.

Our Captain stared into the camera post-match, warning NXT Women's Champion Io Shirai that both her and the title were in her crosshairs. Later in the episode, Kai found out she would earn her opportunity to become the number one contender if she could win a fatal four-way elimination match against familiar rivals Tegan Nox, Mia Yim and Candice LeRae at The Great American Bash Night 1.
