To Kick a Thief

Dakota Kai had put her rivalry with Tegan Nox behind her following their steel cage match that Kai won. Her focus was now on becoming the number one contender for the NXT Women's Championship. To do so she would have to qualify for a Six Woman #1 Contender Ladder Match set to take place at NXT TakeOver: Tampa Bay on April 4th 2020. Her opponent would be another friend turned rival in Mia Yim. On the February 26th 2020 episode of NXT, Dakota took center stage to remind Yim their issues were far from settled.

Mia had a match that evening with Xia Li in front of the NXT faithful at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida. Just as Yim thought she had put Xia away, Kombat blasted and The HBIC's focus was averted from Li to the arrival of Dakota Kai and her new insurance policy Raquel Gonzalez. Kai asked Mia if she remembered stealing her spot in the 2019 Women's WarGames Match and her taking it back. Mia took offense, not grasping the definition of stealing a spot. Dakota could see Mia was bothered, stating it was time to address that theft.

That is exactly what would happen, too. Xia rolled up Mia, "stealing" the victory. Mia had only herself to blame, taking her eyes off the prize. Raquel Gonzalez wanted a workout so hit the ring, laying Yim out with a big boot. Xia unsuccessfully came to Yim's rescue, just pissing off Gonzalez who mauled her with a lariat. Our Captain watched on from the ramp, enjoying the workout. Mia jumped on Raquel's back, getting flung off. Gonzalez smashed Mia to the canvas with the Chingona Bomb. Dakota was pleased, even kind enough to express "she was sorry".

The WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida would host the March 11th 2020 episode of NXT due to Full Sail being unavailable that evening. It was fitting Kai and Yim would battle in the same building their longtime friendship was once strengthened. Kai came right at Mia with a dropkick. Yim evaded it and went for a couple unsuccessful rollups. Kai shot back, slapping the taste out of Yim's mouth. Mia fired back with a long barrage of brutal offense. Kai endured the punishment, getting a moment of respite after dropping Mia over the top rope to the apron.

Raquel was standing there minding her own business when Yim tried to kick her. The six foot insurance policy caught Yim's foot and dropped her face first to the apron snake eyes style. Yim asked for that. Kai nearly loped Yim's head off with a pump kick, her prone body draped over the apron. After the action returned to the ring, Kai went for the Kaio-Kick but Mia moved out of the way. Kai caught herself and reversed course, going for a scissors kick. Yim rolled out of way and tripped Kai. The shotgun dropkick sent Kai to the corner followed by a cannonball.

Mia stacked Kai up for a pin but Dakota kicked out. Kai flung Mia throat first to the middle rope as Yim lifted her up. They traded blows before Kai did some trash talking. Mia tried to take back control but felt an elbow to the face before Kai brought her down to the canvas with the Kairopractor. That move had brought Kai many victories but not this time. Kai unleashed Kawada kicks before giving the Kaio-Kick another try. Once again, Yim evaded. Dakota's foot got caught in the ropes, giving Yim the opening to powerbomb her.

Yim stacked Kai up for a pin but Raquel grabbed Mia's foot, breaking it up. The referee didn't see that but took Mia's word as fact instead of staying impartial as a referee should. Instead of taking notice of Dakota rolling Mia up and making a count, the referee admonished Raquel who was telling him to do his job and register the count. Kai tried to get the referee's attention only to walk into Eat Defeat when she turned her focus back to Yim. The HBIC covered Kai for the pinfall victory, qualifying for the ladder match.

After the match, Raquel took her frustrations out on the winner, pulverizing Yim with a lariat to the back of the neck followed by the Chingona Bomb. Mia might have won the match, however Dakota got the last laugh. There was good news to come for Our Captain since a Second Chance Gauntlet Match in the coming weeks would provide her with another opportunity to qualify for the ladder match to determine the #1 Contender for the NXT Women's Championship.
