Nixon Newell and Kay Lee Ray are the embodiment of pro-wrestling frenemies. In November 2016 alone they met in the ring five times spread across Shimmer, Insane Championship Wrestling, Fight Club: PRO, Pro-Wrestling: EVE and Southside Wrestling Entertainment. One of the meetings was as tag team partners. A triple threat match saw them declared co-winners against Alex Windsor who would referee a Last Woman Standing Match between them later that same day in another promotion.
At the time, KLR was part of dominant heel faction The Filthy Generation in Scottish promotion Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW). She took on all comers, male or female. If you came to her promotion, it didn't matter if you were an enemy, friend or frenemy. She didn't know you or care what past she shared with you. Nixon Newell stepped into ICW for her debut match for the promotion knowing she wouldn't be facing KLR in a sporting contest. It was going to be an ugly fight. KLR would be accompanied by her lover (and future husband) Stevie Boy.
Newell made the mistake of rallying the crowd from the second rope to begin, turning her back on KLR who delivered a rope assisted enzuigiri to her back. KLR kept up a relentless assault with kicks in the corner followed by a nasty forearm smash. She looked to whip Nixon to the opposite corner but got cut off with a roundhouse kick to the head. Nixon didn't stop, delivering a savate kick followed by a running big boot and neckbreaker. KLR would slip to the floor before Nixon could go for a cover.
Nixon attempted a tope dive between the ropes but Stevie Boy cut her off with a blow to the face. ICW's very relaxed rules allowed such interference, putting KLR firmly back in control. KLR smashed Nixon's face into the apron twice followed by a boot choke against the barrier. Stevie grabbed Nixon for a double team but Nixon fought him off with a back elbow. She climbed to the apron and struck KLR down with a running PK followed by a huracarrana to Stevie. Nixon climbed to the top rope but KLR tossed her to the canvas before she could take flight.
KLR put a stop to Nixon's comeback attempt, delivering a hooking lariat. Nixon kicked out of the pinfall attempt and the match continued. Stevie came to KLR's assist again holding Nixon against the ropes. Nixon broke free and KLR barely avoided contact with her lover. Nixon swung at Stevie who barely evaded. KLR thought the distraction would still give her advantage only to find out otherwise when Nixon smashed her with a headbutt. The force of the impact was so fierce it sent both to the canvas.
Nixon took control upon getting to her feet, connecting with two running forearms in the corner. KLR evaded the third only for Nixon to rebound with a superkick. Stevie was primed to intervene so Nixon took him out with a tope dive through the ropes before climbing to the top rope and connecting with a crossbody cover on KLR. It was close but KLR kicked out. Nixon pulled a knee pad down, signaling for The Shiniest Wizard but Stevie grabbed her leg, giving KLR a chance to connect with an enzuigiri in the corner.
KLR executed the KLR Bomb and slowly covered Nixon for the assured victory. But Nixon kicked out. KLR was in disbelief. Stevie grabbed Nixon, allowing KLR to deliver a slap unchecked. But Nixon ducked a second strike and KLR was unable to stop herself from hitting Stevie. Nixon waffled KLR with a roundhouse kick to the head followed by the Welsh Destroyer. But the referee was pulled to the floor by Stevie during the count. KLR rolled up the frustrated Nixon and the referee's hand struck the canvas three times while still standing outside the ring.
Nixon might have lost her ICW debut match, however the crowd gave her a well-earned ovation.
