Nixon Newell vs. Kay Lee Ray at Shimmer Volume 90

Frenemies would collide at Shimmer Volume 90 when Nixon Newell and Kay Lee Ray brought their rivalry to North America. In the United Kingdom they were sometimes bitter enemies, sometimes rivals who respected each other and sometimes even tag team partners. Not even two weeks before, they had a match in Scotland for Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW) where KLR was the worst version of herself against Nixon. But tempers had calmed since and they were in for perhaps a more sporting match -- though by no means any less brutal.

Prior to the match, KLR was about to address her opponent when Nixon approached her. Nixon called her buddy. KLR called her guy. Neither wanted to be called that so they sort of agreed not to by still calling each other such. Once they established all that, they brought up their match that evening. They loved and liked each other but it was a match. Something about Nixon having The Shiniest Wizard. Something about KLR in fact being 10'9 but that's okay because Nixon can climb. So they'll see what happens when they see each other in a bit in the ring.

KLR needed a win having lost at Shimmer Volume 89 earlier that day while Nixon needed a win to keep momentum after scoring an upset win over LuFisto. Nixon's win/loss record in Shimmer so far was 2-5 so she hoped to at least end this cycle with one more victory.

As the match started, Nixon used some fine British technique to counter things to her favor. KLR used some acrobatics to counter back to hers. Nixon took back control with a drop toe hold into an Oklahoma roll for two. KLR would reverse into a pin of her own that Nixon would turn into a sunset flip that KLR would reverse that Nixon would turn back into a sunset flip that KLR would try to turn into a bridge that Nixon reversed into a backslide. KLR would hang on and turn the backslide into a KLR Bomb setup. But Nixon would counter into another sunset flip for two.

KLR hurried over to the corner because there was an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction. Nixon went over and gave her an assist. Once things were okay, KLR extended her hand to Nixon out of gratitude but quickly twisted it and nailed a superkick. Nixon returned the favor nailing KLR in the jaw with a one legged dropkick. KLR reversed Nixon's attempt at The Welsh Destroyer into another attempt at the KLR Bomb but Nixon flipped her over her head and smacked her with a headbutt.

Nixon connected with a running forearm in the corner. She hurried to the opposite corner to charge with another but KLR followed behind her and struck her instead. KLR attempted a springboard leg lariat but Nixon evaded and superkicked KLR in the knees. Nixon went for The Shiniest Wizard but KLR ducked and was able to connect with the springboard leg lariat this time. KLR lifted Nixon up for another try at the KLR Bomb but Nixon slipped off. Nixon went for a clothesline but KLR ducked and delivered a headbutt.

KLR tried to take control but Nixon caught her off a whip and dropped her with a bridging fallaway slam for a two count. Nixon backed into the corner opposite of KLR and landed two charged up forearm strikes. Nixon went for a superkick but KLR caught her leg and rolled her up for a pin only getting two. KLR connected with an enzuigiri but Nixon wouldn't go down, shooting back with a roundhouse kick to the back of KLR's skull. Both went for headbutts that smacked each other's skulls hard, the impact sending both to the canvas in a heap.

Nixon and KLR traded forearms as they got to their feet. KLR changed things up, delivering a slap to Nixon's chest. Nixon came at KLR in a fury only to get smacked across the chest with a more fierce slap. Nixon slugged KLR for some payback and set her up for the Welsh Destroyer. But KLR twisted Nixon's arm to reverse and instead spiked her with a destroyer of her own. KLR went for a cover but Nixon intensely kicked out to state she was far from done.

KLR lifted Nixon up again for the KLR Bomb but Nixon wiggled control and instead planted her opponent to the canvas with the move. Nixon went for a cover but KLR made quite the intense kick out herself stating she too was far from done. Newell climbed to the top and came down with another KLR signature the swanton bomb but she rolled out of the way at the last second. KLR caught Nixon by an arm as they got to their feet and lifted her up for the KLR Bomb, this time successfully planting her to the canvas. But Nixon kicked out at two!

Nixon evaded KLR's swanton bomb. KLR slowly got to her knees only to be struck back to the canvas by The Shiniest Wizard. Nixon covered KLR who again kicked out at two. Nixon dragged KLR into position for a moonsault, hoping it would finish her frenemy off on that night. KLR would cut Nixon off with a shot to the face and attempt a superplex. Nixon would headbutt KLR to reverse position for an avalanche Welsh Destroyer only for KLR to reverse it into a backdrop sending Nixon crashing down onto the canvas.

KLR climbed to the top and crushed Nixon with the swanton bomb. She would hook both legs for a deep cover earning the pinfall victory. The hard-fought war was over. They whispered some words, embraced, touched foreheads and KLR gave Nixon a kiss on the cheek. No matter what happened in the past or would happen in the future -- there was only respect between these two warriors that night. KLR would return to Shimmer for more cycles but this was Nixon's last appearance to date. They would face each other and team up elsewhere many more times.
