Canadian competitor Nicole Matthews had handed Tegan Nox (as Nixon Newell) her second loss in SHIMMER at Volume 82 back in June 2016. In the second round of the Mae Young Classic, Nox had a chance to avenge that loss. Matthews had taunted Nox during the second round face-to-face photo op adding tension to their match. In a surprising moment of sportsmanship, Nicole shook Nox's hand and didn't do anything underhanded. Until she blindsided her seconds later while seemingly expressing concern for her knee.

Nox would attempt a comeback when Nicole was on the floor. But her tope through the ropes was stopped mid-air by a right hand. Matthews unleashed a succession of kicks to Nox's chest while she was stuck between the ropes before wearing her down in the ring with submissions. Nox fired back with a brutal headbutt and corner cannonball. That was enough to set Nicole up for The Shiniest Wizard giving Nox the pinfall victory. Tegan Nox was now in the final eight and would have to face the revamped Rhea Ripley in a quarterfinal match.
